Swim lesson craziness

Contemplating getting in. Alex, Ben, Connor

Ah, that wonderful feeling of jumping head-first into a completely unknown situation. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for spontaneity, but when it comes to managing three small children in a potentially dangerous situation… well, not so much.

Our first day of swim lessons times three was… interesting. I had no idea what to expect going into it, and admittedly things were fairly chaotic for the first day. Add to that three boys who were afraid to get in the water, and later mad they had to get out… well, it was a first day. I kept my cool and nobody drowned, that’s got to count for something.

Tomorrow will be better I am sure. Now that I know what the facility looks like, what we need to be better prepared, and all that good stuff, it should be much smoother. Plus I will be getting in the water now, at the instructor’s request, to help manage the boys. That should help to ease their fears much more quickly, so they can get comfortable and start learning!

Alex still isn't so sure...

Alex still isn’t so sure…

This is definitely one of those situations where being a mom of multiples… sucks. It is so hard to know how to split yourself amongst your children to ensure everyone is safe and cared for. Of course there is the swim instructor, and he has several aides helping him, but still. I can’t be in three places at once, and this is a stark reminder of that. And even though Connor has a little swim experience (very little) and is more confident leaving my reach, I still have to split myself between Ben and Alex, who are very much out of their element in this situation. There’s no easy answer, it is what it is. It’s just one of those times where I feel bad because I feel like the fact that they are twins isn’t exactly fair to either one of them….

But hey, we are just one out of three sets of twins in our swim class! So we are in good company, with other kids who have been down this road already, alongside their womb mates. We will figure it out, and the boys will be that much closer to becoming expert swimmers!
